What Are Garters and Garter Belts and How to Actually Use Them?

What Are Garters and Garter Belts and How to Actually Use Them?
A silly hassle?
The toss-away from your new matching set?
Or the underrated sleeper-piece that deserves priority status?

Probably the last one, and below is why!

Garter belts and suspenders are ultra-classic lingerie pieces that are often relegated to the back of a lingerie drawer as impractical. Garters, however, are genuinely functional; don't let their elegance and small size fool you into thinking they are just silly add-ons. So, consider adding them (back) into your wardrobe with a fresh understanding. You won't regret it!

A Brief History and Purpose of Garter Belts

You can read more about lingerie styles and how garters fit into the larger picture in this blog article.

Garter belts, also called garters, suspender belts or just suspenders, have a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Originally designed as a practical solution to hold up stockings before the invention of elasticized hosiery, garter belts quickly became a symbol of femininity and sophistication. By the 1920s, they were a staple in women’s wardrobes, evolving from purely functional items to fashion statements. Today, garter belts serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, keeping stockings securely in place while adding a chic, vintage-inspired touch to outfits, from bridal wear to everyday elegance.

The primary purpose of a garter belt is to anchor stockings, preventing them from slipping down. Unlike modern stay-up stockings with silicone bands, traditional stockings require garters for stability. But, as we all know, even the siliconed stockings don't always behave and stay where they should. Even beyond functionality, garter belts are celebrated for their versatility, enhancing self-confidence and adding a romantic vibe.

Types of Garter Belts and Suspenders

Garter belts come in various styles, each suited to different preferences and occasions. Here are the main types available:

Garters

Not really what we're talking about here, these are the elastic, stand-alone band that's worn around one or both thighs as an accent piece. They're what's traditionally thrown at weddings by the bride, but really have no practical function. They're purely for looks.

Classic Garter Belts

Show above, these feature a wide waistband with two to six adjustable straps (or suspenders) that attach to stockings. Ideal for everyday wear or special occasions, they offer reliable support and a timeless look. These are usually super lacy and elegant, meant to be aesthetic and worn on top of the hips so they can actually provide hold-up staying power to stockings.

Belt-Style Suspenders

Narrower and more minimalistic, these are lightweight and discreet, ideal for women seeking subtlety under form-fitting clothing.

Integrated Garter Belts

Some shapewear, corsets, basques and babydolls (like shown above) come with built-in garter straps, combining shaping with stocking support. These are perfect for a dramatic, all-in-one lingerie look. It's perfectly fine to leave these hanging unattached to stockings, but they can bunch up if worn under clothing if left loose.

Stockings with Built-in Suspenders or Garter

These are single-piece, stretch-to-fit stockings that combine thigh highs with a garter belt, as one piece of material. The straps that connect the two halves aren't adjustable. Great for trying the look and having an all-in-one solution that's ultra-smooth under clothing.

How to Properly Use and Wear a Garter Belt: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Wearing a garter belt and attaching stockings may seem intimidating with the clips and adjustability, but they're actually very simple.

Put on the Garter Belt

Fasten the garter belt around your waist or hips, depending on the style. For high-waisted belts, position them just above your natural waist; for classic belts, place them at your hips.

Prepare the Straps

Most garter belts have four to six straps with metal or plastic clips. Ensure the straps are untangled and adjusted to maximum length. They're easier to clip on when they're long, and you can adjust them afterward.

Put on the Stockings

Gently roll the stockings up your legs, ensuring they sit evenly without twisting. Pull them to the desired height, typically mid-thigh or higher. For a polished look, align any seams (if present) at the back of your legs.

Attach the Stockings to the Garter Belt

Open the clip on one strap. Slide the top edge of the stocking (about 1/2" to 1 inch from the top) between the clip’s rubber or metal parts. Secure the clip by closing it firmly, ensuring both the stocking and a small rubber “nub” (if present) are gripped to prevent slipping. If there are ribbons to hide the clasp, make sure they're position on the outside.

Pair with panties (they can be worn over the garter belt for easy removal) and your desired outfit.

Adjust the fit using hooks or sliders to ensure it’s secure but comfortable. The belt and stockings should stay in place without slipping during movement, but not be overly restrictive.

Care and Maintenance

Hand-wash garter belts and stockings to preserve elasticity and delicate fabrics. Wash them inside mesh bags if put in the washing machine on cold delicate cycle. Hang to air dry away from direct sunlight and heat.
